Last weekend was The Annual Utah State Championships, this year it was held at the infamous Intermountain RC Raceway in Magna, Utah. A fresh layout was built the weekend before and it turned out to be one of the most challenging in recent years. Various sized sweeping turns, mixed with a big (20ft) triple and several small jumps, this layout demanded precision control of take offs and landings.
I started Fridays practice with my standard setup. The track was wet and everyone was breaking in tires so the fastest laps didnt come until later in the day, near the first round of qualifying. My car felt great and had lots of grip, too much in some spots. A couple of quick changes to the chassis and it felt very good and easy to drive. First round of qualifying went well, I sat 2nd in Expert and 5th in Pro.
Saturday morning started the 2nd and 3rd rounds of qualifiers and I finished 3rd in Expert. The 3rd round I finished 3rd again in Expert and also got 6th in Pro. My car felt great. So I started 3rd in Expert and 5th in Pro for the A Mains.
An early wreck on the big triple left my wing broken and turned slightly but I stayed focused and managed to come back from dead last to a Podium 3rd place finish! I couldnt be happier considering the competition in that class. I quickly repaired the wing and prepped the car for the Pro A Main which came up in only a couple heats. This race was a little rough, there was a huge first turn pileup that caught half of the field and penalized us almost 1/2 a lap by the time it got sorted out. I again focused on catching the cars in front of me, I made good headway moving my way to the front but more wrecks and traffic would prevent any miracle comebacks in this class. I finished Pro in a disappointing 8th place. This was my slowest heat of the weekend, almost a lap slower than qualifying. it was a mess.
My car worked great all weekend, I changed many things trying to improve and go faster but I always seemed to finish with the exact same time lol 22 laps in 6:12. 3 of 4 runs were this same time, unbelievable how consistent the Cougar SVR is and fantastic to drive!
Huge congratulations go to Tony on his race from us all at Schumacher Racing.
